Critically ill for one month, Verlie C. Rice of Cloverdale RR 3 died Wednesday evening at 8:30 at the Putnam County Hospital in Greencastle. Born March 1, 1896, in Putnam County, Mr. Rice was the son of George W. and Ella Knoy Rice.  On Aug 11, 1927, he was married to Dorothy Cooper who survives him.  The 77-year-old World War I veteran who had lived in the Amity community all his life was a farmer. Mr. Rice, who was quartermaster for WWI Barracks 1994, also was a past commander of the American Legion Post 281 in Cloverdale.  Besides his widow, he leaves two sons, Robert Rice of Cloverdale RR 3 and Richard Rice of Sheridan and a sister, Mrs. Ada Leatherman of Greencastle. Two granddaughters also survive him.  Funeral services have been scheduled for 11 o’clock Saturday morning at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Cloverdale. The Rev. GW Evans will conduct the services and burial will be in the Cloverdale Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the WWI Barracks.  Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 o’clock Friday afternoon. – kbz
